Dario Minieri
was born in 1985 in Rome, Italy. At the young age of 16, Minieri was already traveling the world and competing in Magic: The Gathering
tournaments. Life on the Magic tournament trail made the transition into poker an easy one for the young Italian, and he soon took up
“Italian Poker,” popularly known as Five Card Draw. It wasn’t long before Minieri learned to play more lucrative games like Hold’em and
Omaha and soon discovered PokerStars, where he would make his home and eventually, a name for himself in a competitive industry.
He first started playing sit and go’s, focusing mostly on heads up games (one on one), then began to mix in multi-table tournaments.
Minieri made the decision to go pro and abandon his psychology studies after winning $12,000 in a $10 rebuy event. He certainly never
looked back and went on to have an enormous amount of success online, including one day in late 2007 when he accomplished the
seemingly impossible and won three PokerStars tournaments (the High Stakes Showdown, the $215 multi-rebuy and the Sunday $5,200
Freezeout) before making a deep run in the Sunday Million. This insanely improbable day was worth over $155,000 and notoriety from
thousands of online players around the world. Minieri attracted the most attention when he became the first person to accumulate and
spend 3 million Frequent Player Points (FPPs) in the PokerStars VIP store on a Porsche Cayman S. Minieri continued to dominate online,
focusing mainly on tournaments and sit and go’s, which seem to be his game of choice. When asked why he prefers the single table
tournaments over cash games, Minieri said, “It works for me. The reason I like them so much is because it doesn’t matter how much
money you’ve got sitting in your account. You play differently when you’ve got more money available. But sit and go’s work well. It’s
the game I prefer.”

In addition to the incredible successes that Dario Minieri
has had online, he has proven himself as a force to be reckoned with in live events as well. After taking 3rd in the European Poker Tour
(EPT) in Baden, Austria in 2006 for over $150,000, Minieri went on to cash twice at the 2007 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas,
and received significant press coverage for being the chip leader in the Main Event coming off of day three (he eventually finished 96th).
However, it was 2008 that was truly his breakout year on the live tournament circuit. In April of that year, Minieri took another 3rd place
at the EPT, this time in San Remo for an astounding $450,000 (losing the title to Team PokerStars Pro
Jason Mercier). Seemingly saddened in interviews after again
coming so close to a major live title, Minieri went into the 2008 WSOP with a determination to leave with a bracelet; not an easy task
but one that he accomplished when he defeated over 1,000 players to be crowned the victor of the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em event and received
over $525,000 for his efforts. Minieri went on to take 3rd yet again in another EPT event in Warsaw that November for over $150,000. Minieri
continues to put up consistent results on the tournament trail, especially at the EPT, where he won the High Roller event in Warsaw for a
cool $115,000 in 2009. While he constantly is impressing in live events, he credits his online experience as the foundation for his successes,
saying “If you ask me, tournament players could learn a lot from online players. The online school is a very good school. It’s great practice
- you learn how to play quickly and think about your own game a lot. I'd say a lot of online players could become wonderful live players.”
Minieri has many nicknames on the felt,
including “The Supernova” (referring to his VIP status on PokerStars), “Super Dario,” “Baby-Faced Assassin,” “Scarf Boy,” and “The Harry
Potter of Poker.” The last two names were given to the Italian because of the trademark maroon and gold striped scarf that he frequently
wears to the tables. Minieri has said that he utilizes his education in psychology in poker, which helps him identify and attack weaknesses
from his opponents. His aggressive style has earned him the consideration as one of Italy’s top poker players and landed him seats at some
of the toughest tables in the world, including a spot on the television show “High Stakes Poker.” Minieri says that he learns a lot from
frequently playing with the top pros, but that Brad Booth stands out as the player he respects the most. “He’s the best player I’ve ever seen,”
says Minieri. “He plays in high stakes games; what a great player. I learned so many things watching him.”
While Minieri is becoming more and more famous on the live circuit, he is still considered to be an online specialist, particularly in
high stakes heads up games. It’s no surprise that this member of Team PokerStars Pro can often be found playing up to nine tournaments
at once for seven hours a day while maintaining his Supernova Elite status (the highest ranking of the PokerStars VIP program, reserved for
the most dedicated players). When asked what advice he can give to those players who are aspiring to compete in his league, Minieri’s tips
include believing in yourself, staying positive at all times, and not entertaining the notion of bad luck because it will only have a
negative effect on one’s game. When Minieri is not traveling the world to compete in tournaments, he is usually spending time at his home
in Rome where he enjoys playing soccer, watching movies and playing on PokerStars.com under the name “DarioMinieri.”
