Jim Meehan is a player that I met at the 2003 California State Poker Championship at Commerce Casino. I have a tendency to be drawn to
people that are unique and I definitely would have to say that he fits the bill. He is charming in an eccentric kind of way. One thing about
Jim is that he is wiser than most people give him credit for. He is a lawyer, mostly semi-retired, but has realized that the poker world
could offer him more. According to him, he has played poker for more than forty years, which means he started playing in grade school.
I had the pleasure of sitting behind him during one of his poker sessions and I saw plays that baffled me. They worked well
for him, but I am not sure that the average player could pull them off.
He has been traveling the tournament circuit for many years and has offered me insights into some of the well known poker
players that I have not met. I have heard him mention
Daniel Negreanu several times and said that he
considers him a great player, great guy and good poker pal. I also have heard him mention some other names in a not so
friendly manner. He is definitely opinionated and sticks to his beliefs which is what I admire about him. One of the funny
characteristics that he has, is once he has commented about some players bad play, he always follows with "We are all Gods
children" which I find amusing. It reminds me of the people that say "Bless her/his heart".
I believe that the
eccentric personality that I mentioned earlier contributes to his tournament success. People just don't understand him or
his play. The other thing that probably contributes to his success is his memory. The guy can remember with great accuracy
a hand that he played with you back in 1996 on a Tuesday afternoon.
In 2003, he won a bracelet at the World Series of Poker in one of the No Limit Holdem events. He has several final table
appearances in a variety of events; No Limit Holdem, Omaha high, Limit Holdem and Omaha High-Low which proves that he is a
versatile tournament player. Jim finished sixth at the World Poker Tour event at the
Mirage Casino in 2004.
You can find Jim at many larger tournament events or playing online. He won the 2003 Limit Holdem event at the Pokerstars
World Championship of Online Poker and is a regular in the high limit Omaha Hi/Low game.
He has played online as Actiondonkey and Actionmonkey.
