Marcel Luske is one of the most well
liked players on the tournament circuit. He is well-mannered, polite, respectful, and is sometimes referred to as the gentleman of poker.
He is one of the few players who set a great example of how a player should carry himself at the table. He is also one of the easiest players
to recognize at the table because his attire consists of expensive tailored suits and upside down sunglasses.
Marcel has been playing poker since 1999, but it was his second place finish in the Stud event and tenth place finish in the 2004 World Series
of Poker Main Event that catapulted him in the limelight. Many spectators love him because his television appearances are memorable. He not only
plays great poker, he entertains the viewing audience (although not always his opponents) with his singing. One song he shared with the camera was his
own version of one of Supertramp's songs. He sang, "Give a little bit... give a little bit of your chips to me... " I have never played at the
same table as Marcel, but if his classic read of one of his opponents in the main event is any indication of his skill level, then I would rather keep
him at a distance while playing. Most viewers probably remember Luske making a
laydown preflop and announcing to his opponent, "Your kings
are good." The other player tried to lie and said, "You mean my
ace-king?" to which Marcel replied: "No, your pocket kings."
Marcel is from Amsterdam and resides in Holland with his wife and two children. He travels the world to play in poker tournaments and is called
"The Flying Dutchman" by other poker players as a result of him jet setting around the world. He has his own marketing company and is the
founder of the International Poker Federation (IPF). He was the mentor for
David Williams when Williams finished second in the main event.
Noah Boeken is another protégé.
I met Marcel at the 2005 World Series of Poker when we both attended a
Full Tilt Poker party. He was a lot of fun as you can see by the
picture (and no, he wasn't getting fresh). Marcel made an even bigger impression on me at the WSOP when he took time out of his hectic schedule
to talk on the telephone to Charlie Tuttle, a fan that was in the hospital with terminal cancer. Marcel sang to him over the phone and made Charlie
laugh which was something he hadn't done for several weeks. He even asked for the hospital and home phone number so he could call Charlie again.
Luske's was the number one ranked player in Europe in 2001 and 2003. He has numerous final table appearances and first place finishes in a variety of games
including Pot Limit Omaha, 7 Card Stud, No Limit Holdem, Limit Holdem, and Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Low. A few of his victories were at the Hall of Fame Poker
Classic, the Crown Australian Poker Championship, and Five Star World Poker Classic at the Bellagio Casino. |
