Miami John CernutoMiami John Cernuto has been a player on the tournament circuit for years. Many tournament professionals recognize him as one of the best Omaha Hi/Lo players, and I agree. There are not many players I do not like having at my table in that particular game, but he is at the top of that list. I have played with him on numerous occasions and he is usually the person at the table with most of the chips. He gets this done by choosing a decent amount of starting hands, but more importantly by outplaying most of his opponents at the table. He is one of the few players who are not afraid to bet top pair in this game, and he uses the respect he receives at the table to make that work for him.

John resides in Las Vegas, Nevada and travels the tournament circuit. His favorite and best game is Omaha High Low, but he also plays all other games. He has 3 World Series of Poker bracelets: Seven Card Stud Eight-or-Better from 1996, No Limit Holdem in 1997 and Omaha in 2002. Besides the bracelets he holds in these three games, his 2003 Legends of Poker win in HOE (Holdem/Omaha/Stud8) was evidence of his well-rounded talent. He has won three best overall player awards and has more than fifty first place finishes. In 2004, he won back-to-back Omaha Hi-Lo events, the first at the L.A. Poker Classic and the second from Bay 101 Shooting Stars.

John was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and graduated from Florida State University as a finance major. He switched to the more exciting career of air traffic controller and then moved on to poker after being fired by Ronald Reagan. His switch to poker has been good to him and to the poker world. He is always a pleasure to see on the circuit. I just wish he had chosen a different game to excel in than the one that I also like!

Since we both like the same game, we happen to run into each other regularly. The great thing about John is that he enjoys his time away from the table as much as he does actually playing. Often times, poker players will travel to amazing places, but only spend their time in the casino. John ventures out to see the city and has even taken some of us along for the ride. While playing the main event at the Lake Tahoe World Series of Poker Circuit event, we spent one afternoon driving through the mountains, talking poker, and then having dinner at one of the local restaurants. The snowy atmosphere was amazing and the poker discussions were even better.

Miami John went to Vienna, Austria in 2003 to play in the ParadisePoker.com World Heads-Up Poker Championship and placed first, beating a field of 128 players -- including Phil Hellmuth, Scotty Nguyen and Carlos Mortensen. His World Poker Tour final tables include a fifth place finish at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in 2005 and a second place finish at the L.A. Poker Classic Invitational in 2007.
