Most
of the general public knows Phil Gordon as the original commentator on Bravo's
Celebrity Poker Showdown, but there is far more to him than that.
Gordon was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia. At age 15, he entered Georgia Institute of Technology and earned a
degree in Computer Science. He worked at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Santa Cruz for awhile and then eventually went to
work for a new start up company called NETSYS Technologies. In 1996, NETSYS was acquired by Cisco Systems for $95 million. In 1997,
he retired and decided to travel around the world. His journey lasted five years and covered more than 50 countries. Although
most poker players admire his poker accomplishments, it is his worldly travels that impress me most.
Phil Gordon's first major poker finish was at the 2001 World Series of Poker where he finished fourth in the main event and
won $400,000. In 2004, he won the Shooting Stars World Poker Tour
event when he eliminated his last two opponents (Chris Moneymaker
and Masoud Shojaei) on one hand. In November 2006, Gordon won the Full Tilt Poker.net Championship and pocketed $600,000.
Phil has appeared on several poker television programs including NBC's National Heads-up Poker Championship and Poker After
Dark.
Phil has written several poker books including Poker: The Real Deal, The Little Green Book: Lessons and Teachings
in No Limit Hold'em, and The Little Blue Book: More Lessons and Hand Analysis in No Limit Hold ‘Em. He also
released an instructional DVD titled "Expert Insight: Final Table Poker"
Besides writing and playing, Phil has done a lot of poker commentator work. He co-hosted the television series Celebrity
Poker Showdown (as previously mentioned) and co-broadcasts the World Series of Poker final table on Pay Per View. He has also hosted
many corporate poker tournaments and emceed events for Michael Jordan, Seagram's 7, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to name a few.
Phil Gordon is the person behind Bad Beat on Cancer, an initiative that has players pledging one percent of their potential
winnings to cancer research. His efforts have helped raise hundreds of thousands dollars for the great cause.
Gordon is a member of the Tiltboys and is one of the professional players representing the online card room
Full Tilt Poker.
