Randy
Holland has been playing the tournament circuit for many years. His first poker experience was in Las Vegas during
a business trip. He played 1-4 Stud and won $100. Shortly afterwards, in 1992, casinos opened in Mississippi.
He lived in Tallahassee at the time and started playing regularly since it was a reasonable drive to the casinos.
He almost always won and he enjoyed it. A year later, influenced by Tony Holden's book, The Big Deal,
he quit his job to focus on poker for one year.
Early on in his career, he was only a limit player with no big bet experience. He quickly adapted to Pot Limit Omaha
because it was a big game in the south. He told me Pot Limit Omaha was his best game until he moved to California in 1998.
Once in Los Angeles, he got away from playing big bet games and began playing every variety of limit poker. Recently with
the large fields in No Limit Holdem tournaments, he has decided to concentrate on No Limit Hold'em cash games when he
plays live poker. He considers himself to be more of a tournament player than a cash game player. I asked him who he
admires and tries to learn from and he told me, "In tournaments, I was influenced early on by the styles of
John Bonetti and T.J. Cloutier, but I learn from everyone."
Randy lives with his wife Laurene. She is a registered nurse and a recreational player. She won a No Limit Holdem
event at the Four Queens in 2003 and was 2nd in the Ladies Limit Holdem event at Tunica in 2004.
Holland is one of the most consistent players on the tour. The thing that impresses me most about him is how well-rounded of
a player he is. He can play almost any game better than the average player and has a good chance at making money in all of
them. His tournament finishes should be an indication of this because he has cashed in almost every type of game imaginable.
Randy's major accomplishments include two World Series of Poker titles: 1996
Razz and 2000 Seven Card Stud HiLo. He won back to back
titles at the L.A. Poker Classic in 2002 and 2003 in Limit Holdem and is the 2001 World Poker Open Stud High Low champion. In 2004,
he finished first at the Grand American Poker Classic in No Limit Holdem, and at the Poker Derby in No Limit and Dealer’s Choice.
His World Poker Tour credits include a final table at the Legends of Poker in 2006 where he finished fifth. |
