Angle –
1. An unethical method of gaining a tactical advantage over another player.
2. An opportunity for profit in gambling.
The game of poker is rife with rules and procedures governing play. These rules are sometimes bent or violated in
spirit by players who are willing to compromise the integrity of the game in order to gain a tactical advantage. This
is called “shooting an angle.” The number of angles available to the ethically challenged is approaching infinity. Here
is an example of one: Two players are heads up on the river. Player “A,” who is first to act, makes an ambiguous hand
motion that player “B” takes as a check (no bet). Player “B” now checks and turns his hand up, believing the hand is
over. Seeing this, player “A” now bets claiming that he never checked or made a checking motion.
When “angle” is used as a general gambling term outside of poker, it drops its negative connotation. Often, a gambler
with handicapping abilities will see the potential for gambling profit where less sophisticated gamblers will not. In
this case the handicapper can “see the angle.” For instance, if a horse bettor notices that a certain jockey has an
excellent record in a certain race, he may always bet that jockey in that race, and yield a profit over the long run.
This would be considered an angle.
Usage: Angle Shooter, See an Angle
