Ante – A small amount of money used to seed the pot. Often used in the late stages of tournament play, or in ring
games where blinds are not present.
In ring games, antes are used as a method of seeding the
pot, in games where there are no blinds. Generally,
Stud games will use antes, and Flop and Draw games will use blinds. If a game uses antes, on every hand, before the cards are dealt,
the dealer collects a nominal sum from each player. If players do not post their antes on time, the dealer will request
that you “ante up.” The amount collected is small, usually a fraction of the game’s lower betting limit. For example, a
$3/$6 Seven Card Stud game would usually have an ante of $.50 or $1.00. This is used to establish the pot and give the
players something to play for, creating action.
In tournament play, antes are often introduced
in the later stages of most games (including flop and draw games). When antes are added it has the effect of raising the stakes, because
they are added in addition to the
blinds. This will make
the pre-flop pots larger for the remainder of the tournament. It is usually correct to change gears and become more aggressive pre-flop
when antes are introduced, as pots will be bigger and your stack will be eroded much more quickly if you do not accumulate chips.
Usage: Ante-Up, Steal the Antes
