Brush -
1. A card room employee who assists players with seating, chips, etc.
2. The brush used to clean felt tables.
Traditionally, “The Brush” is a poker room employee who assists players with seating, chips, and other concerns, and does
odd jobs around the card room. This includes cleaning the felt-top poker tables with a soft bristle brush, hence the
name. As the popularity of poker has increased, and card rooms have grown, the all purpose job of the brush has been
sub-divided into several different jobs. Larger card rooms now hire a bevy of employees, assistant
floorstaff,
chip runners, porters, board persons, and
cashiers to do what was once considered the job of The Brush. Smaller card rooms may not have all of this specialized labor, and
may still rely on The Brush to handle customer needs. But the term “The Brush” is becoming obsolete, and even in small card rooms
these employees are more likely to be called assistant floor or chip runners.
Poker tables tend to get dirty during play, so it is necessary to clean the felt before a game starts. This is done by
removing the rail that borders the table, and using a soft bristle brush to brush off debris. Sometimes it may be
necessary to use the brush while the game is going, if a departing player left the table in an unsuitable condition for
an incoming player.
