Bubble - Placement in a tournament just outside of the money.

Tournaments typically only pay about 10% of the field. When you play a tournament, you can finish “in the money” (ITM) or out of the money. If you finish just outside of the money, it is referred to as finishing “on the bubble.” Players regard finishing on the bubble as a tragedy. Typically, when you finish on the bubble, you have played most of the day; you have beaten 90% of the field and you have nothing to show for it.

As the money approaches, and the bubble starts to form, significant changes occur in the action. First of all, most of the bad players are long gone, and the remaining players tend to become increasingly tight and solid. The short stacks really tighten up because they only have enough chips to play one hand, and they would like to make the money before they risk busting out. Of course, the deep stacks realize this and they will steal blinds with impunity. The bubble is the best time for deep stacks to accumulate chips, because everyone else is holding on trying to make the money. After the bubble bursts, and everyone is in the money, there is an explosion of gambling by the short stacks. This is because the payouts at the bottom of the money are relatively flat. This creates an incentive to gamble, because the only money being risked is the small difference between bottom end payouts.
