Buck - Another name for the dealer button.
Buck is a poker term that is not used as often now as it used to be. Years and years ago, before there were
house
dealers, each player would take their turn to deal. A marker (buck) was used in those games to determine who the dealer
was at that time.
It has been said that once upon a time, an actual buck knife was used and that is how the term was derived. When a
player didn't want to deal, they would say "pass the buck" and it has now transitioned into a phrase that means to pass
responsibility.
Harry Truman was an avid poker player (nice article found
here) and one can only wonder if his famous
slogan "The buck stops here" had anything to do with his passion.
