Chase -
1. To take a draw when you strongly suspect you are behind.
2. To take a draw with a slim chance of winning.
3. To take a draw without pot odds.
Players often call even when they suspect
that they are behind. This is called “chasing.” A person who frequently makes poor quality chases is called a “chaser.”
Sometimes it is incorrect to chase, but sometimes a player will have
pot odds, making the chase correct.
For example, if a player were to call four bets with
bottom pair only, it would be
considered a “bad chase,” because pot odds clearly do not exist. On the other hand, if a player were to flop an open
ended straight draw, and had a bet and five
calls in front of them, they would clearly have pot odds to chase their straight.
Sometimes a player will chase because they have gotten “married” to their hand. This means that they have become
psychologically attached to their hand because of the investment they have made. They find it difficult to cut their
losses and get away from their hand even if it is the right play and will save them money in the long run. Obviously,
this is a bad thing to do, and it is a bad habit which is commonplace among players who play poorly.
Usage: Chased and Got There, Don’t Chase, Chase You Down
