Chip – A small clay or plastic marker indicating a specific value, often wagered in place of cash.
Poker games, like pit games (house backed
casino games like Blackjack, Craps, etc.) use chips for wagering in place of cash. A chip is a round, color-coded clay or
plastic marker with a dollar value displayed on one or both sides. It has cash value in the casino or card club from where it
originated, and may be traded with a cashier for its cash equivalent. Every casino prints and releases their own chips, and
they may or may not accept chips from neighboring casinos.
Generally, chips are round so that they are easy to stack and cut, and they are color coded by value so that they are
easy to differentiate. They are usually a standard size; one hundred chips will fit exactly into a standard sized chip
rack. Sometimes larger, oversized chips are
used for higher denominations. Oversized racks, which also accommodate 100 chips, are used to transport and store these chips.
A chip rack is often referred to as simply “a rack.” It is a rectangular piece of plastic with five rows, each of which can
hold 20 chips (often called a stack).
Depending upon where and what game you play in, chips may or may not be required. In most low limit games, cash does
not play and chips are required. Some games will allow cash to play along with chips, but you can expect to receive
mostly chips when you win a pot.
