Family Pot – A pot in which many (or all) players dealt into the hand call before the flop.
Often, a family pot is created not so much because players are being “friendly” and having fun, but usually because of
pot odds. After seeing several early
to middle position players
limp in, late position players holding
marginal (and even garbage) hands are usually getting the right odds to call and join the pot.
Family pots are more often seen in limit games than no limit, where simple math dictates the action. In some “free” or
play money games
(i.e. – “bet or fold” games), almost every hand will start with a family pot because players have nothing to lose.
