Flop – The first three cards on the board of a community card game.

In community card poker games like Texas Holdem and Omaha, players are dealt their hole cards and there is a betting round. After the first betting round is complete, the dealer puts three cards on the board (called "the flop") for the players to use in combination with their hole cards. After the turn card and river (and more betting rounds) are dealt, the best five card hand wins the pot.

The majority of the time, the flop can either make or break a hand. A player would likely fold a pair of sevens on a flop of KQT. On a board of K73, he would likely proceed and win a nice amount of chips from his opponent (especially if his opponent had AK, AA, or 33). Just because a flop doesn't "hit" a player, doesn't mean that the flop didn't make his hand. For example, in No Limit Holdem, a player in the big blind might call a small raise out of the big blind and then take the pot away from his opponent by firing out if the flop looks ragged.
