Flush – Five cards of the same suit.
The word flush is a possible
rank of a poker player's hand. When five
cards in a hand have a common suit (i.e. Jc9c6c5c2c) you have a “flush”. A flush ranks above (is stronger than) a
straight and below (is weaker than) a
full house.
If two players hold flushes in the same hand, the one with the highest card not shared is the winner. For example, in a Stud
game, KJ953 of diamonds is a better (stronger/winning) flush than KJ864 of clubs, as the first cards not in common are the 9
and 8.
In Hold’em, where community cards
are used to make a flush, the player with the highest hole cards wins if two or more players have a flush. For example, if a
flop contains the J85 of hearts, a player holding the K2 of hearts wins against an opponent who has the Q9 of hearts.
A spade or club flush can be called “all blue” or “all black.” A heart or diamond flush can be called “all pink” or
“all red.“ Sometime players will get creative and say “all green” or “all purple.” This can be entirely appropriate,
because they do make decks that use other colors than the traditional red and black. No matter what color is used, it
always means a flush.
