Forced Bet – A required bet that starts the action. Antes, blinds and Stud “bring ins” are forced bets.

Designed to induce action, forced bets entice players to enter the pot and/or raise trying to pick them up without a challenge.

In Stud, there are actually two types of forced bet: “Antes”, which all players must put into a pot and also a “bring in” bet by the player with the lowest card (by suit) showing. Having these forced bets on the table encourages other players to enter into the pot to try and win this “dead money”. In Hold’em, the small blind and the big blind are both forced bets that are posted by players on a rotating basis around the table. In No Limit Holdem tournaments, antes are usually introduced in the $100-200 level and help make the pots even more appealing.

In tournaments, these forced bets are increased at steady intervals to force a conclusion to the event within a given time frame.
