Free Card – A turn or river card that you don’t have to call a bet to see.
Often based on play earlier in a hand (or because of your reputation with your opponents) a free card results as part
of two basic strategies (“taking” and “giving”): An example of “taking” a free card is if you are on the
button and raise when you flop a
flush draw, your opponents may check
to you on the turn. If you make your flush
on the turn, you can bet. If you don't get it on the turn, you can check as well, seeing the river card for "free."
On the flip side of that coin, “giving a free card” can also be used by a player who is slow playing a big hand and trying
to trap his opponent. For example, a player who flops a
set (three of a kind) might check to his
opponent hoping that he might make some kind of hand that will force him to call a bet that he might not call otherwise. However,
this strategy has risks. The player receiving the free card might end up making a hand that is better than his opponent's.
