Gutshot Straight - An inside straight draw.
In contrast to an open end straight draw where a player has four consecutive cards and can make a straight by hitting a
card on either side, a gutshot straight draw has to hit an inside card in order to complete its hand.
If a player has KQ and the flop shows T94, he has a gutshot straight draw. He needs a Jack to “hit him in the gut” (the
“gut” being the middle of his draw) to complete his hand. A gutshot straight is also known as an “inside straight” or a
“belly buster straight" and is normally not a good
draw unless the pot is offering very favorable
odds.
There are times when a player can have a
double gutshot straight draw
which would offer the same odds as an open end straight draw. Say for example a player has 78 on a board of T64, he could
hit a nine or a five to make a straight giving him eight outs.
