House - The casino or cardroom that is holding the game.

Any establishment that runs a game of poker and incurs the expenses of doing so is called the “house”. The “house” makes money by charging a small rake per hand (or hourly time charges) to pay the overhead involved in providing the games (i.e. – dealer’s salaries, drinks for players, electricity, etc.).

Although the rake is small in comparison to most of the awarded pots on any given hand, it amounts to a lot of money over time. Players need to make a large hourly rate in order to pay the house and still make a profit. It is often said that the house is the only one making money in a gambling establishment.

Even home games often take a small drop from each hand to pay “the house” (for beer and chips, etc.). Over the years, a lot of home games have real dealers for the game rather than each player taking a turn. The house would also pay the dealer from the money collected from the drop.
