Isolate – To raise with the intention of thinning the field of opponents.

Occasionally, it is necessary to manipulate pots by raising or reraising because certain hands play better against fewer opponents. When doing this, it makes it harder for opponents to call and helps improve your equity in the pot.

A good example of profitable isolation is when a Holdem player reraises with 99 to play heads-up against 44 and gets KJ to fold. Isolating works in Omaha Hi/Low as well. Sometimes it is correct to isolate with a hand like AKT3. The hand is certainly playable, but it has a very good chance of either making a high hand or a low hand (or even better - scooping) when only facing one player. Even a pair of tens can often win for a high hand in a heads up situation.

Even though it might cost them some equity, some players will isolate with big holdings like AA or KK because they want to reduce the risk of getting sucked out on. It is much easier to “isolate” in no limit games because you can protect your hand with big raises and whittle the field down to opponents who will be large underdogs to your hand.
