Kicker – An unpaired card in your hand that is often used to determine the winning hand between two similar hands.

A kicker only contributes to the value of a poker hand when two or more players are holding the same pair, two pair, or trips. Kickers are the extra unpaired cards in a five card poker hand. For example in a Holdem game, one player is holding AK and the other player is holding KQ on a board of K8433 then both players would have two pair (kings and threes), but one player has an ace kicker and the other player has a queen kicker. In this instance the kicker comes into play because the first player's best five card hand is KK33A, so he would win against his opponents KK33Q. If the kicker(s) are tied then the players would chop the pot.

Sometimes the winner is determined by using a second kicker. For example in a Stud game, one player's best five card hand is TTA87 while another player's best five card hand is TTAJ9. In this case, the first kicker (the ace) is the same, so the next card would be used. The player holding the jack would win because the jack is higher than the eight.
