Lead -
1. To be ahead in the hand.
2. A term used to describe the player who is doing the betting. As in, "He lead out with his pair of tens."
A player’s hand is “in the lead” if his hand is stronger than an opponent’s before the next card is dealt. For example,
in a race situation where one player is all in with JJ, and is called by a player holding AK, the Jacks are in the
lead. The “lead” would change of course if an ace or king (or QJT) appeared on the board, meaning the player with the
pair of Jacks is now behind in the hand.
“Lead out” or the phrase "take the lead" is also used to describe the player who is doing the betting in a hand. If
a player bets or continues to bet on the flop then that player would be "leading out". There are times when a player
gives up the lead. If for example the board didn't help him in any way and he is pretty certain that it did help his
opponent, he might check. If he checks,
he would be giving up the lead.
