Lock -
1. A hand that is guaranteed to win.
2. Reserving a seat in a casino.

Every poker player’s dream is a hand that cannot lose. Also known as an “immortal” or a “clinch hand”, a lock is money in the bank.

For example, a player holds pocket tens and sees a flop of T-T-4. Although he would be very delighted, the hand is not technically a “lock” at this point. Any player holding a higher pocket pair could theoretically hit running cards on the turn and river to make higher quads. However, in this case, if the turn card is anything lower than a ten, his hand is now unbeatable, or a “lock” and the player can bet the turn and river with impunity.

A royal flush is automatically a “lock” in Hold’em, as it cannot be beat or even tied. In Stud, there have been documented cases of two royal flushes appearing in the same hand. Now that’s a lock with two keys!

The term is also used in brick and mortar casinos when asking a casino employee to hold a seat. Say for example, you have your name on the board for a $6-12 Holdem game while playing in a $3-6 Holdem game. If a seat opens up, the board person or floor person will let you know that your new seat is available. You can let them know you want them to lock it for you (usually done with a post-it or a chip) and that will hold your seat for a limited amount of time so you can rack up your chips and move to the new desired table.
