Marked Cards - Cards that can be read from the backside because they have been  altered. Sometimes not illegally.

Sometimes cards can become marked from normal wear and tear. The corner of one card might become slightly bent and any player that has seen the card now knows what the card is anytime they see the bent corner.

Many times though, a marked card is done to help cheaters identify certain cards. As long as there has been card playing, there have also been cheaters; the unscrupulous players always looking for an angle. By devising ways to make inconspicuous markings on key cards in the deck (i.e. – aces or all picture cards), cheaters are able to identify those cards as they are dealt off the deck or locate them in their opponents’ hands. Simple bends, notches made by fingernails, tiny rips, etc. are just some examples of markings used to alter/tag cards.

The use of “dirty decks” was just one of the reasons that “burn cards” came into play: Spotting a marked card on the top of a deck being held by a dealer did the cheater no good, since that card would now be “burned” (buried) into the muck before the next round of play.
