Marker - An IOU to the casino where you are playing for poker chips.
A marker is essentially a credit voucher granted to a player by
“the house”. Signing a marker
obligates a player to pay the marker off, usually at the end of play or within an agreed upon time period.
Usually, markers are only given to regular players who have established their credit, or to those who provide financial
information that satisfies the house’s confidence that the player will be able to pay off any markers taken. For
example, a high stakes player traveling from New York to Las Vegas might not wish to carry cash, and can prearrange
a credit line with the casino. Once he arrives, he can then just ask for a marker when he begins play, in exchange
for chips. When cashing out at the cage,
markers are generally required to be paid off before any additional profits are turned over as cash to the player.
If a player loses, he must make good on the credit he was allowed and settle up with the house at the end of his stay
or within a designated time period.
