Monster -
1. A strong hand that is likely to win the pot.
2. A very large pot.

A hand can be considered a “monster” unto its own, or in combination with community cards when a hand is “made”. For example, in Hold’em, pockets aces are certainly a “monster” hand. They will often win a pot uncontested without a flop.

However, the term monster is more commonly used when the community cards turn a routine holding into a very strong holding. For instance, a player who holds AJ suited preflop has a good hand. However, if the flop reveals A-J-J, he has “flopped a monster” hand that is most likely a lock (an unbeatable hand).

Often times, a player will tease another and use the term sarcastically to declare a very inferior hand when faced with a bet or large raise, such as “I’m folding a monster!” and showing a 7-2 offsuit.

Players also use the term, monster, when talking about a large pot such as "I won a monster pot and now I am chip leader at the table."
