Muck -
1. To fold a hand.
2. The pile of discards in front of the dealer.
Both a noun and a verb, “muck” is used to describe cards no longer in play. When you fold, you are “mucking” your cards.
Hence, they go “into the muck”.
A slight distinction can also be made between folding and mucking your cards as follows: In the middle of a hand, when a
player gives up his cards and action continues after him, he is more commonly said to be “folding” the hand. However, at the
completion of a hand, when there is
a showdown to determine the winner, many times players will not want to reveal their losing cards, and thus “muck” them.
