Nuts - The best possible holding during any given hand.
You won’t say “Ahh, nuts!” if you hold the nuts in poker! You want the nuts, which is the best possible hand given the
board and cards in play.
For example, if the
community cards end up as Kd-Jh-9d-6d-4c,
and you hold the Ad-Xd (“x” being any other diamond), you have the nuts, meaning you have the highest possible hand of an
ace-high flush. Sometimes you will hear the term “nuts” applied to the best possible hand of a certain “category”, even
though it isn’t the over all nuts. In the above example, a player holding Qc-Ts might say that they had the “nut straight”
(which is true), but they still lose to the best flush.
