Option - A choice afforded to the player who posts the big blind to either check or raise.

Because blinds are forced bets, with the big blind being the minimum callable bet, an “option” is given to the player that posts the big blind when all other players entering the pot have just called (or limped in).

His option is to just check his hand and let his forced blind act as his entry into the pot, or he can choose to raise the other players. The option to raise causes the betting to go around the table once again to determine which of the original callers will now continue in the hand by calling the big blind’s raise.

The option is only available on the first betting round (before the flop) and is the only time a big blind hand can be said to have “position” because he is last to act. After the flop, he loses any advantage of having an option and is early to act. In a preflop limped pot, the dealer will usually remind and address the big blind by stating, “Your option.”
