Overcall - To call a bet after one or more players have already called.

An overcall is a call that is made after the bettor has already been called by at least one other player.

When someone calls a bet in front of you, it changes the dynamics of the betting situation. Since it is possible that the bettor is bluffing or betting a weak hand, you can generally call with a weaker hand than you can overcall with. In order to win with an overcall you must beat all of the players who have called in front of you as well as the bettor. This requires a stronger hand than a call you might make against the bettor only. This is especially true for river calls, because players who call in front of you on the river can no longer be on draws, and must have completed hands in order to call.
