Pocket - Cards that are dealt face down.

The unique cards to each player in flop games, which only they can see, are called pocket cards. In Texas Hold’em the first two cards dealt to each player (face down) are their pocket cards. In Omaha, pocket cards are the first four cards dealt to each player. As opposed to the community cards, which everyone can play (make use of), pocket cards are individual to each player’s hand.

In Stud games, pocket cards are more commonly referred to as “hole cards”. These would include the first two dealt face down to each player, plus the last card on the river (or 7th street) which is also dealt face down. These are distinguished from one’s “up” cards, which can be seen by other players in the game.

The term “pocket” as it is used in card playing is somewhat analogous to “hiding something in your pocket” that you don’t want others to see.
