Pot Limit - A betting structure that limits a bet to the size of the existing pot.
Pot Limit describes poker stakes in which the maximum permitted bet is the size of the pot. If there is a previous bet
in and a player wants to raise, the amount of money put in the pot as a previous wager is included in the amount allowed
for the raise. Additionally in pot limit, the amount of money put in the pot to call is also included in the amount allowed
for the raise.
For example, in a pot limit game with blinds of $10 and $20, one player limps (adds $20 more to the existing $30 pot, making
it $50 total) and a subsequent player now wants to raise. His raise is limited by the size of the existing pot before him.
Since the previous player’s wager is now committed to the pot it is included. So first, his “call” adds another $20 to the pot,
now increasing it to $70. Thus, the maximum raise at this point is $70 (30 in blinds + 20 first limp + 20 call before raise),
which now makes the pot $140 total.
Pot Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha are popular games, especially in Europe.
