Pot Odds - The amount of money in the pot compared to the amount you must put in the pot to continue playing in a hand.

Pot odds are an important factor in skillful, high-percentage poker. They're mathematically complex and quite confusing for some people. The bottom line is that you need to make decisions with pot odds in your favor then you will have a positive expectation to win.

Betting odds exist in every hand whether a player understands the odds or not. Therefore, it is important to at least have some knowledge of whether you as a player are receiving favorable or unfavorable odds before proceeding in a hand. Suppose you were playing Limit Texas Hold'em and there was a $60 pot and your opponent bet $20. It would cost you $20 to continue in the hand with $80 in the pot already which means you would be getting 4 to 1 odds on your call. If you had a set against an opponent who you were certain was holding a flush, you would be getting 4 to 1 on your  bet, but you would be about 3 to 1 to make the winning hand. In this instance, you would be getting favorable pot odds to call.
