Qualifier - The requirement that must be met in order to be eligible for any share of the pot.

Normally used in high-low split games, the qualifier is the requirement that must be met in order to have a chance at winning the low pot. In Stud High-Low and Omaha High-Low games, the typical qualifier is “8”. Thus, you will often hear the phrase “8 or better” meaning a player must have an 8 low or better to win the low pot.

Qualifiers are what distinguish high-low games with other low games, such as Razz where the lowest hand wins without any minimum requirement. An example of having a “qualifying” hand in Omaha H/L would be a player holding A2QK with the board showing J467Q. The player can use the ace (as low) and 2 from his hand with the 4,6 and 7 from the board to make a low hand that is 8 or better, in this case a 7642A-low.

Qualifiers can also refer to events that lead to other events, like a "World Series qualifier", or to a person who has made it into an event that way, like "John is an online qualifier".
