Read – Having a good idea of what another player’s cards are.
Both a noun and a verb as it applies in poker, a “read” or “reading someone” is a very important, intuitive part of the
game. To be able to read a player is to have a strong (accurate) feel regarding an opponent’s probable holding based on
the way they play and conduct themselves during a hand. Paying close attention by looking at their mannerisms and
listening closely to what they say can help you put a read on what hand they have.
If you pick up a tell on an opponent
that you can exploit over and over, you have a read on them. Smart players will continually switch gears (or vary their
playing style) so that others at the table won’t be able to read them as well.
Maniacs are difficult to read because
they raise with mediocre cards and bluff very often, making it harder to know when they might actually have a strong
hand.
Picking up reads on the players around you is a very valuable component to becoming a successful player, but can take
time and experience to master.
