Represent – To bet in a way that indicates you have a certain hand.
Occasionally, players represent a hand that is often nothing like their true holdings. For instance, if you raised before
the flop, and then raised again when the flop came ace high, you would be “representing” at least an ace with a good
kicker. Or, if you are holding the Ace
of diamonds (with no other diamond) and the flop brings two diamonds, you might be able to represent a
flush draw by betting. If the flush
card comes on one of the later streets, you might be able to pick up the pot on a bluff.
Sometimes, players holding a very strong hand will have the opportunity to represent a weaker hand, hoping to induce more
action from his opponents. For example, if a player flops a
set of sevens on a board of 3-7-9, he might
just check his “set” hoping his opponents will bet into him, or that the
turn card will actually help his opponents
so that he will be able to extract more chips from them. If the turn is an ace, king or queen, he can then tentatively bet
out to “represent” that the high card helped his hand, when in fact he hopes it has helped his opponent who might then raise.
When the action comes around to him again, he can now pounce on this opponent with a
reraise (representing a “battle of big aces”), hoping
they will stay committed to the hand.
When a player bluffs towards a pot, he is
usually taking advantage of the texture of the board to represent a hand that will beat his opponent’s likely holding.
