River – The final card dealt in a poker hand.
In flop games, such as Texas Hold’em
and Omaha, the fifth and final community card
dealt face up is called the river. As it is the last of 5 community cards, it is also called
fifth street.
In Stud games, the river is the seventh and final card dealt to a player (face down and sometimes referred to as 7th
street). In Stud, remaining in a hand until the 5th and final betting round is often referred to as going to the river.
There are many other expressions involving the river card and are some of poker’s most commonly used phrases. For instance,
“He drowned in the river”, “He’s a river rat”, “He lives and dies by the river”. The river card can make or break a hand in
dramatic fashion, as often this is where draws are made to suck out on "made hands”. Some players curse the river, but
it is as much a part of a 7-card hand as the flop and turn. It just comes last.
