Rock – A very tight, conservative player.

The complete opposite of a maniac or live one, a rock plays very conservatively and “by the book”. A rock lacks creativity at the poker table and is extremely predictable. When a rock raises, you can safely throw away all but the very strongest hands as you can be certain they have a monster hand that is sure to be the favorite. Rocks are not involved in a lot of action hands.

Ironically, a table with several rocks (sometimes called a rock garden) will usually create a maniac amongst themselves. A sharp player will eventually recognize the general nature of his opponents and change gears to take advantage of the rocks’ tight natures and steal lots of blinds and antes by raising and bluffing often.

True rocks are seldom found among the final three players of poker tournament, where risk taking is often required in the later stages.
