Runner –
1. Both the turn and river cards used in conjunction to make a hand.
2. An employee of a casino who runs chips between the cashier and the players and dealers.
A term typically heard as “runner-runner” to signify two cards running off the deck on the turn and river to make a
winning hand. For example, if a player has the Ad7d and his opponent has JhTs and the flop comes 9d-8c-Qs (giving a
straight to the second player) the first player can only win the hand with “running” diamonds to make a flush. Another
way of phrasing that is, “He needs runner-runner diamonds.”
Hitting runners is lucky for the player needing them, and very frustrating to the player who was well ahead in the
hand. A hand that hits runner-runner is said to have had a
backdoor draw. Oftentimes, players
will stay in a hand on the flop with a mediocre hand (such as middle pair) if they also have a backdoor
draw that could improve their hand
significantly if runners appear.
The term "runner" is also used to describe a job title of a casino employee who runs chips for people that need them.
A runner will take cash from a player or dealer and "run" it to the
cage and exchange it for chips and vice versa.
