Scare Card - A card which may scare the player who has been betting, because it is likely to complete a powerful
drawing hand.
A scare card is a card which appears likely to complete a very strong hand. For instance, if there were a
flush draw on
the flop, the appearance of a third (or even fourth) card of that suit on the board would be considered a scare card.
The appearance of a scare card can change the dynamics of the betting. For example, if the scare card causes the player
who has been betting to suddenly check, it can open the door for a
bluff. If the bettor continues to bet
the scare card, it may indicate that the card completed his hand. For this reason, many aggressive players will bet a scare
card in order to represent a strong hand, but will
muck if they are raised.
The arrival of a scare card is a critical moment in the hand. It is likely to have a huge impact on which player wins
the pot. A scare card can often trigger involuntary
tells from both you and your opponents.
You should be looking for things from your opponents like over-acting and feigned displeasure. These tells indicate a strong
hand. Also be on the lookout for genuine disgust or long (but not unnaturally long) pauses before calling, or other tells
that could alert you to a bluffing opportunity.
