Second Pair - A pair of the second highest card on the board in a flop game.

In a flop game, a pair can be described relative to the other cards that are on the board. A pair made with the second highest card on the board is called, “second pair.” Similarly, a pair made with the highest card on the board would be “top pair,” and a pair made with the lowest card on the board would be “bottom pair.” A pocket pair higher than any of the cards on the board is called an “over pair

In a holdem game, second pair tends to be a weak to moderately strong hand, depending on the situation. For example, if you are first to act, or if there has been substantial betting and raising in front of you, second pair is a very weak hand. In this case, it is usually a bad idea to chase with second pair, especially if you are clearly beat and have no other draw. However, it is a mistake to discount the value of second pair all the time. If you are in late position and no one has bet yet, second pair is a relatively strong hand, and can be played aggressively.
