Set - A specific type of three of a kind, where a player has a pocket pair with a single card of the same value on the board.

In a flop game, a set occurs when a player has a pocket pair, and a third card of the same rank appears on the board. If a player makes three of a kind using only one card from the hole, and two from the board, it is generally referred to as trips, not a set. On its face, differentiating between trips and a set may seem like splitting hairs, but there are very real differences between the ways these hands play out.

Generally, a set is considered a more valuable holding than trips. One reason for this is that a set is naturally concealed from the other players more effectively than trips. Since trips require two identically ranked cards to appear on board, players are naturally suspicious that trips may be present. With a set, there is only one card used from the board, so there is no indication from the board that a set is present. Another characteristic of the set which adds to its value is that when it is used to complete a full house, it opens the door for other players to have trips of whichever card paired the board. An of course, a full house slaughters trips. If this situation occurs, you are likely to get good action from the player with trips.
