Shark - A strong player who "feeds" on weaker players.
A shark (also called a card shark) is a very good player who often wins when he plays. He is the antithesis of a
fish, who is a poor player who
practically gives his money away. This is the foundation of the poker food chain. The sharks “feed” on the fish.
It is a good idea to learn who the sharks are in a particular game, so that you can avoid them, or at least sit
to their right.
A funny dynamic to this relationship is that one person’s shark may be another person’s fish. A player may be a shark
in the lower limit games, but if the try to move up, and out of their element, they can become a fish. Or, a very good
player may struggle with a weaker player’s particular playing style This type of role reversal is often short lived,
as a good player will typically make adjustments if they are not getting the best of it. Sometimes it is not clear who
the sharks are and who the fish are in a game. In fact, players can even switch roles during the game, most commonly
going from shark to fish if they go on
tilt.
This brings to mind an old poker proverb with a nugget of truth in it: “Look around the table. If you’re not sure who the fish is, it’s you!”
Card sharks is different than a "card sharp" or "cardsharp". Sharks use skill to win, while sharps are card manipulators or cheaters.
