Stand Pat - To take no cards during a draw round in draw-style poker games.
In a draw game, the draw is typically optional. If a player has a completed hand they may draw no cards during a
drawing round. This is called “standing pat.” A player will indicate that he is standing pat by rapping the table with
his knuckles when it is his turn to act. When a player stands pat it indicates to the other players that a completed
hand has been made. This may cause the other players to drop out on the next betting round if they have not completed
their hands, or it may even cause them to break up their weak completed hands and draw to stronger ones. For this
reason, standing pat is often used as a bluff. A player may stand pat when he does not have a completed hand in an
attempt to get his opponents to break their completed hands or
muck their draws. This is called a “snow.”
