Structure -
1. A set of rules governing the betting, which dictate when and how much a player may bet over the course of the hand.
2. The way the prize money in a tournament is awarded.
3. The betting rounds and limits in a tournament.
The “structure” of a poker game is the set of rules which governs the betting. In a limit poker game, the bet amounts are
established. This is called “structured betting.” In a no-limit poker game the bet amounts are not established. This is called
“unstructured betting.” In a limit game, the game is defined by the size of the structured bets. For example, a Holdem game with
a structured small bet of $4 and a structured large bet of $8 is called $4/$8 Holdem. Because there is no structure to the betting
in a no-limit game, the game must be defined differently. The biggest factor affecting the size of a no limit game is often the size
of the blinds. Therefore, a no-limit game is defined not by the size of structured bets (it has none), but by the size of the blinds.
For example, a no-limit game with $3 and $5 blinds would be called $3-$5 blind no-limit. If the
No Limit game is a restricted buy-in game, it
may also be identified by the size of the minimum or maximum buy in. For example, a $3-$5 blind no limit game with a required buy-in
of exactly $500 may be called either $3-$5 blind no-limit, or alternatively, $500 buy-in no-limit.
Tournament structure is the amount of betting that is permitted in any particular round. It varies for different reasons. Typically,
higher buy-in tournaments have better structures which increases the odds for a skillful player.
