Stuck - Losing.
In a poker game, “stuck” is slang for “losing.” A player may say, “I’m stuck,” meaning that they are losing in the
game. The term may also be used by a player to describe how much they are losing, for example, “I’m stuck $600.” If a
player who was stuck recovers their money, they have “gotten unstuck.”
Being “stuck” can literally be defined as being unable to move or escape. Losing a significant amount of money in a
poker game can deliver a similar sensation. The thought of leaving the game with a large loss can be so unpleasant that
a player may feel trapped, or “stuck” in the game, and may want to stay as long as it takes to recover their losses.
Some players are so obsessed with getting unstuck, that they will stay and play for several days in an attempt to
recoup their losses. This rarely works out, because it is hard to play good poker after losing for 72 hours straight.
Usually these players just end up making their situation a lot worse.
To avoid this downward spiral into hopelessness, you have to learn to accept a loss. Nobody could possibly win every
time that they play, especially if they are playing 72 hour sessions. So, refusing to leave so long as you are stuck
obviously doesn’t work. A better solution is to set loss limits that you can live with in advance. If you reach this
limit, you need to be disciplined about calling it quits and accepting the loss.
