Tight - Not playing many hands.

A poker player is said to be "tight" if they are very selective with their hands and only play the top starting hands. In Holdem, some of those hands would include AA, KK, QQ, AK, JJ and TT. In Omaha Hi/Low, a tight player would play hands like AA23, A234, AK23, and A2KK.

Tight players usually don't have the volatile swings that loose players have. On the flip side of that, their wins are often smaller than those that take a little more risk. They are also a lot easier to read than a player who is able to change gears and is capable of playing any sort of hand.

Newer players tend to do well when playing a tight game. They can use their time at the table to learn the ins and outs of the game without putting too much at risk. As soon as they feel comfortable though, it is necessary to mix it up a bit.
