Trips - Three of a kind with two of them on the board.
There are several ways to describe a poker hand when three of the cards are the same
rank. Three of a kind, trips, or
set can all be used, but technically
there are subtle differences between them. The term, three of a kind, can be used anytime, but a set is used when a
player has a pocket pair in their hand and hits one more card of the same rank to give him three of a kind. For example,
if a player is playing Texas Holdem and has 99 on a board of K94, he would be holding a set.
Trips is used to describe three of a kind when two of the rank are on the
board with the player holding one more in his
hand. Say for example a player is holding AJ on a board of JJ843 then he would be said to have trips.
All three terms are often mistakenly used interchangeably and almost all players know what a player is trying to say if
he chooses the "wrong" term.
