Under the Gun - The first person to act on a betting round.
Position is an important factor when
playing poker. Players that are in first position are said to be "under the gun" whereas a player that is last to
act is said to be "the button". There
are other names for various seats such as "the hijack" and "the
cutoff", but no seat is as undesirable
overall to the player as the under the gun position.
While playing poker, information is power! A successful player gathers information and makes educated evaluations of
how to play his hand in the most profitable way. Some of the information can come in the forms of physical
tells, betting patterns, previous
experience with the player, and information from the hand that is in progress. A player sitting under the gun generally
does not have as much information as a player that is sitting behind him because he is acting before them. Therefore,
the player who acts last is said to have better position.
